This online CPD training course is aimed at anybody who wants to expand their knowledge of suicide awareness and prevention. Learners should be able to recognise the effects of suicide and suicidal thoughts on the affected individual, their loved ones and on wider society. They will also understand how to recognise suicidal behaviour in children, young people and adults and how to support individuals.

Section 1 summary:

In this section, learners will be introduced to the terms ‘suicide awareness’ and ‘suicide prevention’. They will be able to understand the types of ways that someone can take their own lives, the circumstances and factors that might influence suicidal behaviour, the statistics around suicide and how to recognise and respond to the signs of suicidal intent.

Section 2 summary:

In this section, learners will explore the stigmas and stereotypes around suicidal behaviour, the effect that these social attitudes can have on children, young people and adults, media coverage of suicide, the groups most affected by self-harm and suicide and the campaigns and charities available to support those affected.

Section 3 summary:

This is a video based section. It will include an extended long interview with an expert in the field.

Section 4 summary:

In this section, learners will learn how to support someone with suicidal thoughts, the professional support available to suicidal individuals, the impacts of suicide on a personal and societal level and good coping strategies for suicidal thought and grief.
